Chester was originally built by the Romans to keep the Welsh out of England.
The 'Dewa Roman Experience' is one of Chester's many attractions and it has the largest Roman amphitheatre in Britain. Many of the older black and white buildings are half timbered and although look medievil are actually Victorian.
It is possible to walk around the city walls in a couple of hours although there are plenty of guided tours for those who prefer a more leisurly trip.

Other attractions include Chester Cathedral built between the 13th and 15th century, Chester zoo and the military museum. A must for shoppers are the covered medieval shopping streets dating back to 1139 known as the 'Rows'.
